FUTURE SHORT STORY

In the year 2050, I found myself walking down the bustling streets of a vibrant city, marveling at the technological advances that had become a part of everyday life. Self-driving cars whizzed by overhead, while robots efficiently carried out tasks around me. The air was clean, thanks to the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources, and the buildings around me were covered in greenery, serving not only as homes and workplaces but also as ecosystems for countless plants and animals. As I made my way to my office, I logged into the virtual workspace, connecting with colleagues from around the world through immersive holographic technology. Our team was working on cutting-edge research, aimed at solving some of the world's most pressing problems, from climate change to food security. As I walked out of the office at the end of the day, I felt grateful to be a part of a future where humanity had harnessed the power of technology and innovation to create a better world. A world...

PLANT ID

Image
The scientific name of my plant is Rhododendron simsii Planch. The common name of my plant is Azalea.  Rhododendron simsii is a shrub native to southern and central China, as well as Formosa, Burma, and Thailand. It grows up to 8 feet tall and has elliptic to ovate leaves covered in bristly hairs. The plant flowers in May, producing clusters of two to six funnel-shaped flowers. It has been valued as a garden plant in China and was introduced to Europe before 1812. It is commonly grown by Belgian and Dutch growers for indoor decoration during the winter months. R. simsii is rare in gardens in its wild form. My whole group participated in our discussion; myself, Madison, and Keegan. The meeting lasted from 3:15-3:45. When talking about the class, my whole group agreed that we were enjoying the assignments a lot, as well as the fact the class is easily manageable. The majority favorite assignment was the walk and bread baking. We talked about bread baking and how our bread turned out....

Planting Seeds

Image
1. I am trying to grow radish seeds.  2. While getting started I was reminded of experiments I did growing plants in middle school in plastic bags. I am placing the bag in my window for sunlight during the daytime. I hope to see the seeds sprouting so I can in the future put them in a larger pot.

Baking Bread

Image
Recipe:  - Ingredients: active yeast, warm water, bread flour, kosher salt -Steps:  Mix together the flour, salt and yeast, then add warm water and mix. The “dough” will be very wet and sloppy, not kneadable at all – this is what you want!  Cover with cling wrap then place it in a warm place (25 – 30°C / 77 – 86°F) for 2 hours. The dough will increase in volume by double or more, the surface will become bubbly and the dough will be wobbly, like jelly.  30 minutes before dough has risen, or while refrigerated dough is coming to room temperature, place dutch oven (cast iron pot) in the oven to preheat at 230°C/450°F.  Scrape dough out  of bowl onto floured work surface. It will be wet and sticky and that’s exactly what you want – because we will  not be kneading it!  In fact, you won’t even touch it with your hand.  Use a dough scraper or anything of similar shape (spatula, cake server, or large knife) to fold the sides in so it roughly re...

Keep Your Trash

Image
My whole group, Madison, Keegan, and myself participated in the discussion this week. The group discussion lasted from 3:45-4:15. A large realization my group had was that most of the trash we collected was packaging from the goods we bought. Furthermore, the packaging was in many cases larger than necessary, which in turn produced more waste. For instance, Madison shared a time when she ordered concealer from amazon, and the packaging was so large and unnecessary. We concluded that the items we had were mostly necessary and we couldn't really change the matter of the packaging ourselves due to this being an industry issue. In regard to my own trash collection, I noticed that there were many paper towels, napkins, and disposable plastic ware. In the future, I could turn turns more sustainable options and use towels, rags, and glassware. Lastly, Keegan gave good insight into our trash industry in the United States. He stated that the U.S. is first in trash production, yet does a v...
